Kelly & John of Chillasana Yoga Surf School in Playa Carrillo, Costa Rica

This past spring, while planning our fourth trip to Costa Rica (my husband and I just returned from two weeks at the beginning of July), I had been combing through my few Central American connections and searching the world wide web to see if maybe, just maybe, I could land a photoshoot while on vacation.

I managed to connect with a few very interesting and helpful people but nothing was ever written in stone. I ended up throwing the idea on a shelf inside my head and decided to wait until I arrived in Central America. I knew I wanted to try my hand at surf photography and I definitely knew I wanted to incorporate more portrait photography into my travel photos but, otherwise, I was open to anything!

My husband and I have good friends who live in the very vibrant, but a little bit sleepy (perfect combination), community of Playa Samara. Samara is located on the Northern Pacific coast in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. Since this was our fourth time visiting, we needed no invitation. It was like going to the cottage; a super-cottage located on the equator, that is

Over the years, our good friends have introduced us to some of their friends, a few who we can now call friends of our own. Every time we visit it just gets better and feels like a “home away from home”. On this particular trip, we decided to rent a house on the beach and just chill for the first week. Our time leading up to the trip was very hectic and we both needed to unwind. We spent our days sleeping in, cooking some good food, swimming in the bath-like ocean water AND, in a truly unbelievable phenomenon, I napped! Almost every day! (Please note: I have NEVER napped).

Over the past, I’d say 6 months, I’ve been feeling so sluggish; both physically and mentally. I have loads of energy to do my work but not much goes beyond that. I’ve been feeling like I need space; space in my mind, space in my spirt, and some space in my jeans (I tend to like the desserts!). So, I thought, while on vacation why not try my hand at yoga again? A surf community such as Samara is sure to have classes!

It turns out that one of the beach bars, a total favorite in Samara, La Vela Latina, turns itself into a yoga studio three times a week in the mornings. I was telling a girlfriend about my desire to stretch and she mentioned it to me. I thought sure, yoga by the ocean sounds so relaxing! Vela is a 7 minute walk from our rental house along the ocean.

I show up for my first class half asleep and meet my petit and adorably pregnant yoga teacher, Kelly. I’m warmly welcomed into the class and we begin. The class starts out at a good pace and then “what the ?#$%”!!! You see, I soon discovered that when you’re shown how to do yoga properly, with one on one instruction as Kelly offered me throughout the class, it’s actually a crazy ass-whooping workout! In the end, I was destroyed and blissfully relaxed all at the same time. It was magic.

The week went on and I continued poking my way around the community looking for people interested in photos, all the while returning to yoga. Upon arrival of my second class, my instructor Kelly asked, “Are you Catherine? Laura’s friend? Laura’s told me all about your photography, it sounds amazing!”. I am COMPLETELY asleep at this moment and I think I responded with something dumb like “Oh yeah? How sweet of her!” (Catherine connect the dots: beautiful pregnant yoga instructor complimenting your photography next to the Pacific Ocean… hmmmm). I think I was halfway through the class and literally trying to mold this rusty frame of mine into a downward facing dog when I realized the opportunity knocking.

When class finished I doubt I could ask Kelly fast enough if she was interested in a seaside maternity shoot. Lucky for me she was all for it. As we discussed the details, she mentioned her husband, John, who together they run a surf school in the next little bay-town over from Samara, Playa Carrillo. “I’m sure he could round some boys up for photographs” she says. WOW! I was so excited. We made our plans and it was a done deal; a maternity-surf shoot in Playa Carrillo.

Chillasana Yoga Surf School is located directly on the beach in Playa Carrillo. When I first visited Costa Rica 4 years ago, Playa Carrillo was introduced to us as one of the prettiest beaches in Costa Rica and, basically, a secret. There are few tourists and very little development along the beach. Kelly and John offer yoga retreats, surf retreats, stand-up paddle board tours, public yoga & surf classes, and more. The team will also arrange accommodations and transport for you during your stay with them, that suit your needs and budget.

I show up at 9am to start shooting with Kelly, her husband John, and a few of his students at the surf school. I had so much fun. Everyone was so relaxed and trusted in what I was doing. The pictures turned out effortlessly beautiful and I was so happy to have the opportunity to do a photo shoot in Costa Rica.

After the shoot I start talking with John and Kelly, asking about how they met. It was a case of Kelly (originally from Canada) travelling to Central America with no agenda, looking for a place to live in and around the Samara-Carrillo area. Enter John (originally from Costa Rica) and the rest is history. You just never know who you’re going meet.

I imagine that Kelly and John began their relationship much like most of us do. However, it wasn’t long after Kelly and John met that complete tragedy struck their lives. John was in a terrible car accident and was told he would never walk again. “The doctors told me that and it went in one ear and out the other”, John said. “I was not accepting that.” Through his spirit, his incredible determination, and the support of his angel, Kelly, John was surfing, walking and STANDING there telling me this story, four years after his accident.

Kelly explained to me the step by step process as John healed and learned to walk again.”We would do a few steps at a time with his arm around my shoulders, after so long of that, we progressed from the wheelchair to crutches. Each stage took months of effort and struggle. From crutches to cane, and then little by little, small periods at a time, he began to walk without supports.”

Can you imagine, living the life you’re living right now and in a split second everything stops and changes? I often feel as if I’m just going through my days. I wake-up, work, work, work, maybe attempt to exercise, come home, feed the cat, make dinner, watch a little tube, sleep and repeat. Everyday, taking my time for granted.

When I think about Kelly and John’s story (even though I only spent a mere few hours with them), I think about the incredible energy and work they’ve already contributed in their young lives. A relationship in itself is hard work, let alone the healing after a life altering accident. Three months after John’s accident he lost some very dear family members and had to add grief to the mix of pain he was enduring. It takes incredible strength and courage to face that kind of “work.” To push through it and never, ever, give up.

The truly amazing part is, is that Kelly and John’s story isn’t over. There’ll be much, much more work and life to come (judging from the photo above, Kelly and John have another pretty big chapter about to unfold!). Really, I guess, we’re all creating our own stories and there will be more twists and turns for all of as we live our lives. But, after hearing a bit about Kelly and John’s story, I feel inspired to be more present in my own life. This is another message to me. A sign reminding me to spend the time I have now and spend it wisely. It’s only too late if I wait.

Just a little note about the photo above, I choose this photo because while writing this post all I could think of was the Bridesmaids movie. It is absolutely one of my most favorite movies of all time and I seriously laugh hysterically everytime I watch it. I just had to include it!

Over the past few years, while “developing” (no pun intended) my career as a wedding photographer, I have learned a few lessons that I’d like to share with you. During my time editing photos, I find myself noticing a few little things that can be easily avoided by applying some quick and easy prep work. Granted, any good photographer can set and visualize a scene. But we what we are mostly focused on is YOU and making YOU shine! These suggestions are merely added bonuses to the already glorious photographs we create together!

First off, clean and declutter! There is nothing, I’m telling you nothing! That can make your wedding or lifestyle images shine better than clean, decluttered surroundings. Especially on the morning of a wedding, brides and grooms are surrounded by their friends and families. It’s a constant bustle of activity, food, hairspray, combs, coffee cups, you name it! No doubt it’s hard to keep order during such an exciting time. However, by designating at least one space, perhaps the nicest room in your home (or wherever it is you’re getting ready) to put that dress on, fasten those cufflinks, or slip into your Jimmy Choo’s with nothing but clean, crisp, hotel-manicured surroundings (no coffee cups, no water bottles, no nothing!) it will make a world of difference in your photographs!

How ’bout a mani/pedi? When preping for any photoshoot why not make a day out of it! A manicure and pedicure can go alonggggg way. Fresh, modern photographers are shooting you at all sorts of angles and close-up’s that don’t always incude your face! Treat yourself to a little pampering and get those nails clean, soft, and camera ready!

If you’re looking for good Esthetics in the tri-cities I highly recommend Euro Reflections Spa (small, quaint, European esthetics), or Voila Salon & Spa (good for groups and large wedding parties plus they use Aveda, my fave!), and finally The Waters (pure relaxation as if you’ve been whisked away to an exotic island!).

WHAT TO WEAR?! Remember your Grandmothers couch from when you were a kid? If not look back at the photographs… I have one of me and few of my cousins all lined up and sitting on it. Every time I look at it I go into a phase of vertigo from the crazy busy pattern on on the valor fabric of the chesterfield! When dressing for your shoot remember that crazy patterns become one dimensional in a photograph. In most cases (not all), neutral/earthy tones are best and ALWAYS stay away from logos. Also when dressing-up for a shoot: know your body type, don’t fear it. Dress appropriately for your environment and don’t be afraid to ACCESSORIZE! Finally, unless it’s your wedding day or a special occasion, don’t EVER wear something you wouldn’t normally wear! You will be most comfortable in your everyday style and look.

For those of us wearing glasses: when possible consider choosing an anti-glare lens. And for any sunbathers out there, wear a strapless top or bathing suit as tan lines=not cool!

Look & listen! Attention Brides, grooms, officients, families, and friends! When the time comes to say I do and I’m talkin’ ceremony folks, take a deep breath and keep your gaze focused on the happy couple! So many wonderful candid shots can happen during a wedding ceremony but the base has to be there to create those conditions. This means paying attention to what’s going on! It’s so easy to get distracted… the flowers, the dress, the guests, the ceiling?! Imagine a huge panorama shot of a wedding party standing at the front of the church. A lovely shot of all 12 of you standing in a uniform row. Perfect metering, perfect ambiance, perfect moment and third from the left, a bridesmaid staring at the ceiling, mouth open, gazed and trying to figure out how did they get those lights up there! How do you tell your wedding party to pay attention during your big day without sounding like a bride/groom-zilla you ask? Ahhhh… you do one of two things either politely share this post with them or let your PHOTOGRAPHER do it for you!

Please remember, we are all beautiful and I believe it’s possible for everyone to shine in their own unique way. In fact, without our individuality, photography would be bland, boring, and probably not worth the time.

These hints are what I have found to be helpful in delivering the fresh, modern, magazine-like photos we OOOOhhh and AAAAhhh over while flipping through the wedding magazines! They are only suggestions and I encourage everyone to put their own unique spin on whatever it is we create together!

I have posted this post as it’s own page under the About section of my website as Helpful Hints. As I discover more about createing the perfect conditions for a photoshoot, I will add to it.

Kelly & Greg's Engagement Shoot

Today is a special day for a couple of reasons… this morning, I spent time with Kelly and Greg (above) while we shot their engagement shoot in and around Maryhill. We had a wonderful time, lots of laughs while they put up with all my crazy ideas, such as this one!

While we were planning for today’s shoot and trying to find a suitable date, Kelly had contacted me and asked me if May 26th would work. At first I hesitated… but then decided no, this was perfect and we booked it.

I met Kelly and Greg at the Wedding Dreams Bridal Show at Bingeman Park this past January. We only spoke briefly at the show but I had a feeling I’d see them again. They ended up contacting me after the show and we decided to go for a drink and chat about their wedding. During this first visit, we talked about their experiences and they told me that this was to be their second wedding. Kelly and Greg had both previously been married before but had lost their spouses to cancer. A mutual friend connected them a little while later and now, the rest is history!

The reason I hesitated at booking their engagement shoot today is that May 26th is also the anniversary of my Mother’s passing. When this day comes around (even though it’s only the second anniversary) I actually don’t know what to do myself… Do I cry? Do I cook something she loved? Do I party in her honor? It’s so hard to determine but it’s also important for me to acknowledge the day by doing something special.

A very wise woman, a dear friend, once told me that there are powerful life lessons we learn through the death of a loved one. Lessons that cannot be taught verbally. How we grow through this experience is up to us, I guess, but this small piece of advice actually completely changed my life.

When I think about my life before I lost my Mother, I didn’t understand or was even conscious to why my life was the way it was. Why I live here? Why I do what I do? Why the people who are in my life are in it? I took everything for granted, including myself. I didn’t know my dreams were possible. I of course had tons of support from family and friends to go and do whatever it was I dreamed, but I think I was at a stand still… Just maintaing the relationship I had with myself and those around me.

After Mom passed away, I felt a haze come over me and I started questioning everything. Those questions of: Why I live here? Why I do what I do? Why the people who are in my life are in it? And now, why all of that was changing?! Came rushing at me and it wasn’t long until I realized something had to change.

My Mom was an incredible woman, she was the strongest woman I have and will ever of known. She was the cornerstone of our family and I don’t think she ever put herself first. Mom was also a writer, she wrote some short stories but mostly she wrote poetry. Her poems reflected on her life and her journey through cancer (she battled the disease on and off for 16 years). My father and I to this day still find small poems written in the margins of old phone bills, on napkins, in journals… they’re everywhere!

My Mother had many dreams, probably more than I will ever know. What I do know is that one would’ve been to have her writing shared and appreciated. As I write this blog post, I stare down and see the piles of her journals and papers I have collected from her home now sitting under my desk and this makes me sad. It makes me sad that she never had that dream come true and it makes me mad that I didn’t see or understand that before. So what do I do?

If I really think about it, I’ll have all of her writing published and entered into Oprah’s book club. Stat! (This will happen, just give me time). But what can I do to honor her and her dreams today? What would’ve made her happy, right now? Well, it’s a guess, but I think, she would’ve been happy to see me with Kelly and Greg today. Two kind, generous people who have felt pain, experienced loss, and found love again and me recording their story… Loving every minute of it Mom told me everyday, sometimes five times a day, “I love you bubs” (not a glamorous nickname but I’ve come to deal with it). I was a growing part of one of her dreams and I never realized that until after she was gone.

Mom wouldn’t of wanted me to put my dreams aside because she didn’t see all of hers come true. I now understand that she put some of hers aside so mine would. And now, that is exactly what I intend to do for her.

Let me start over again… *ahem* Last night it was my pleasure to photograph the NOMINEE RECEPTION for the 2011 Waterloo Region Arts Awards at the Walper Terrace Hotel in Downtown Kitchener. The Waterloo Region Arts Awards have been honouring local artists for 24 years. Last night, 56 nominees in 11 different categories were announced to our community. Each nominee was honoured with their nomination certificate presented to them by Rebecca Short, Chair of the Arts Awards Committee; Carl Zehr, Mayor of the City of Kitchener; and Angela Vieth, City of Waterloo Councillor.

The evening consisted of music, food, drink and LOADS of wonderful conversations all about the growing Arts community of Waterloo Region. It was wonderful to be a part of the evening and so energizing to be in the room with so much talent!

Now, the real Waterloo Region Arts Awards Ceremony will be hosted at the Centre in the Square on Sunday June 3rd at 5:45pm and tickets are still available! Parents, this is an opportunity to expose your children to the possibilities of the arts; Students interested in the arts, this is the place to start networking within our regional arts community; Citizens of Waterloo Region, this is a wonderful way to contribute to creating and supporting a vibrant community.

Major Hooples Boarding House performs at the Registry Theatre in Kitchener

When I was a kid, probably the biggest thing that set me apart from the rest of my friends and classmates was that my Dad toured with a band as a Soundman and Manager. This wasn’t just any band, Major Hooples Boarding House is a K-W institution and a huge contributor to both our local and national music scene throughout the 1970′s & 80′s.

Major Hooples Boarding House was formed in the late 1960′s, originally as the Shan-De-Leers. Their name was eventually changed to Major Hooples Boarding House by then Manager, Larry Shannon. This local KW act consisted of the original members (there would be many more to come and go over the years) Rocky Howell-vocals & guitar, Peter Padalino-vocals & guitar, David Lodge-vocals & bass, Gail Selkirk-keyboards & vocals, Rick Riddell vocals & drums.

Most of my memories of times with the band are from when I was pretty young. I can remember sitting on an old (possibly brown valour?) couch in the band hall behind the Maple Lane Milk Factory on Lancaster Street, listening to them practice. I recall one night when my Mother was out-of-town, I was at home with my Dad, there was some sort of speaker? microphone? amplifier? monitor? whatever “meltdown” at Lulu’s and my Dad had to go down to repair it. Out of bed I went and the next thing I knew, I was sitting in the world’s longest bar in my pj’s. Awesome.

Lulu’s was actually a place I frequented often as a youngster because of the band. I can remember having to stop there on our way up to Grand Bend one Friday night (our family has a summer place in Grand Bend). My parents took me in through the stage door. I remember the door opening and it was just utter chaos. People all over the place, smokey, loud, fun coming at you from every corner! At least, that’s what I saw through my Mothers hand as she kept a tight grip over my eyes

I have misty memories of afternoon practices involving road hockey, a night where I’m told (I think I was only 2 years old) I was accidentally put in charge of the lights at what was once the Grand House. Wish I could remember that one! I’ll never forget an Avon corporate concert, possibly in London, where fake money came shooting out at the crowd during one of the sets. This was of course very exciting and probably the reason it became such a very vivid memory as it took me a few minutes before I realized it was actually fake money. In the mix of everything there were New Years Eve gigs in hotels, Dad on the road and his stories when he came home (I’m quite sure I got the G-rated version but whatever, it was entertaining at the time), and of course the music, lots of music all around you all the time. It’s a wonderful way to grow-up.

In hindsight, I guess you don’t realize at the time how special something is until you understand life a little more and understand how the events and people in your life have played a role in forming you. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t tour with any bands and yes I was small but, I don’t ever remember the band not being a part of my life and one of the biggest parts of my Father’s life. It is an incredibly important chapter, for all of us.

After a minor break three of the original Members of Major Hooples Boarding House are back together and playing again. Rocky Howell, Peter Padalino, and Gail Selkirk with boarders Ron Duke and Ralph Hetke, will perform to a sold out audience at the Edelweiss this Saturday May 5th in Kitchener. The last time I saw the band, they were practicing in preparation for the gig. Before I left the practice that night, one of the band members said “so, what do you think of the sound?” I said “I love it, I can’t wait for the 5th, I’ll be the first one there!” However what I meant to say was that it had been so long… too long, since I had heard anything, sound sweeter.

See the full gallery of one of their recent shows at the Registry Theatre in Kitchener.

Tropical flowers bloom everywhere during the lush summer months in Costa Rica

Hi Everyone,

This summer, my husband and I are planning on returning to one of our favorite destinations, Costa Rica!!! From June 22nd to July 9th 2012 we will be trekkin through Centro America I’m so excited!

A good friend of my husband’s moved there just before my husband and I met. We went for our first visit in 2008 and fell in love with it. I love to travel. It’s something I had never really been inspired to do before I met Trev. He’s been everywhere and I doubt I’ll ever catch up to him. However, I’m happy he still wants to travel as I can’t ever imagine stopping!

If Trev and I ever wanted to really push ourselves, take a risk and have a new experience, I think we would probably experiment with living abroad for awhile. It’s something we talk about often and I could see it becoming a reality one day. I would be open to trying anything but I know we would seriously consider a year or so in Costa Rica before looking elsewhere.

As a wedding photographer, I could really transfer my work anywhere. The destination wedding market is something I’m a HUGE fan of. The mix of travel and wedding photography for me = DREAM JOB! This year I have been hired (so far) for three more destination weddings. I already have Aruba under my belt and trash-the-dress portfolios from both Jamaica and Cabo San Lucas. In 2012 I will add full weddings from Puerto Vallarta – Mexico, Roatan – Honduras, and Gurgaon (New Delhi) – India! I am SO incredibly lucky to be having these experiences and am really looking forward to all of them!

Not to be greedy… But, I would LOVE, LOVVVVVVEEEE to keep expanding my destination wedding portfolio and want to make sure I’m not missing out on possible opportunity. If it is at all possible to add Costa Rica to this already growing list ( I will be meeting with a couple this Sunday to talk about Jamaica in 2013 ) I am going to make it happen!

Since I will be visiting Costa Rica this summer already, I am looking for couples getting married there who might be interested in my services. I know it’s unlikely that there would be many destination weddings planned in Costa Rica during our hot-sunny summers, but you just never know!

If by chance, you know of someone getting married or planning a wedding in Costa Rica from June 22, 2012 to July 9, 2012 please send my website their way! I am a happy, no nonsense , flexible person, dedicated to having fun.

Gracias!

Although I think my booth turned out pretty spectacular at the recent Wedding Dreams Bridal Show at the Bingeman Conference Centre (especially since I was a last minute sign-up), it was a TON of work pulling all those pieces together in just a few weeks! Finishing off new promotional materials, figuring out how I wanted to express my talent and showcase my work… it gave me lots to do! One thing I didn’t mind too much was the shopping I tend to be pretty good at it and hey, nothing like splurging on 5000 jelly beans! (the folks at Bulk Barn must’ve thought I was insane… #crazyjellybeangirl). Anyways, after a long day of running around, feeling very cold, tired, and to be honest, a bit on the cranky side… I walked out of the grocery store and the sky was just grinning from ear to ear with this glorious sunset! I have been lucky enough to have traveled to some beautiful, distant, tropical locations but seriously, we don’t have to go anywhere to appreciate the beauty of our planet. It’s right there, smiling down on us everyday and every night

On Saturday January 14th and Sunday January 15th, this weekend! I am very happy to announce that I will be representing my business, Catherine Mombourquette Photography, at the annual Wedding Dreams Bridal Show held at Bingemans Conference Centre in Kitchener Ontario.

The Wedding Dreams Show is the largest bridal show serving the Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph and surrounding area. This year, the show celebrates it’s 25th anniversary of showcasing local exhibitors who offer a complete array of the best wedding related services and products available. Brides who register online by January 12th will receive complimentary admission into the show. Additional tickets are $10.00 at the door. The doors open at 10am and the show will close at 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Catherine Mombourquette Photography will be located in Marshall Hall, booth #85. When you enter Marshall Hall, turn right through the foyer, then left just after the main hall and you will see me second from the end on the lefthand side. Lucky brides who book either at the show or within 10 days of the show (offer expires January 25th) will receive $300 off of my regular priced packages plus, a custom 20 page photobook to showcase their memories, an additional $200 value!
